Exclamation OEMs Could Determine Windows Phone 7 Upgrades

Conflicting reports, much? Not too long ago, we heard that there might not be any 6.5 devices meeting the WP7 specifications needed to upgrade them to the shiny new mobile Operating System when the time comes. Those words were spoken by Aaron Woodman, Microsoft's Mobile Communications Business Director, so we're hoping that he might have some insight into the situation. Either that, or there's just so many WinMo 6.5 devices out there, that he can't keep track of them.

We raised the question with that article, regarding the existence of HTC's HD2, and the fact that, physically, the device is definitely capable of running Windows Phone 7. However, according to Woodman, this is not the case.

Now, we're hearing that OEMs will actually be in charge of deciding whether or not they want to spend the money and resources in upgrading their Windows Mobile 6.5 devices to the "Smart Design." To some, this means that any previous Windows Mobile 6.5 device will be upgraded if the OEM chooses to, but, that makes us think the whole "minimum specifications" that Microsoft is trying to enforce means next to nothing. Right now, the HTC HD2 is the only hardware that meets those specifications. Other devices like the Touch Pro2 are close, but lack the processor strength.

According to Alex Reeve, Microsoft's Director of UK Mobile Business Group, who was responding to a question posted to Twitter about previous handsets getting the upgrade to Windows Phone 7, it's all up to the manufacturers.

"It's early days yet, and that's really for our hardware partners to think about."

As we mentioned earlier, conflicting reports. We don't know what to think. Then again, this could fit right into the 3 Chassis Design, that Microsoft has in store for Windows Phone 7. If the third chassis, which wasn't really detailed, means that older Windows Mobile devices that don't necessarily meet the specification requirements to run a full-fledged Windows Phone 7 experience, then this is the reason, right here.
